Identificar el nivel de conocimientos del Sistema Internacional de Detección y Evaluación de Caries ICDAS, en los estudiantes de 8vo y 9no semestre de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Central de Ecuador período 2017-2018

Abstract

La caries es una de las principales causas de consulta odontológica, razón por la cual es importante realizar un diagnóstico eficaz, mediante métodos diagnósticos que presenten alta sensibilidad y especificidad. Objetivo: Identificar el nivel de conocimientos acerca de los criterios del Sistema Internacional de Detección y Evaluación de Caries (ICDAS), en estudiantes de 8vo y 9no semestre de la Facultad de Odontología. Materiales y método: Se realizó un estudio transversal, descriptivo, cuantitativo, cualitativo; con una muestra de 205 estudiantes de octavo y noveno semestre de la Facultad de Odontología de la UCE, el instrumento que se utilizó fue una encuesta previamente validada la cual contiene 13 preguntas sobre el Sistema Internacional de Detección y Evaluación de Caries (ICDAS). Los resultados fueron analizados con el programa estadístico SPSS 23.0, se determinó el porcentaje de conocimientos y la prueba estadística Chi- Cuadrado de Pearson, una significación con el valor (0,05) 95% de confiabilidad. Resultados: En base al estudio realizado los estudiantes de octavo y noveno semestre de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Central del Ecuador tienen un nivel de conocimiento bajo sobre el Sistema Internacional de Detección y Evaluación de Caries; el promedio en forma global tiene una media de 30,62% que equivale a un nivel de conocimiento adecuado y un 61,54% de conocimiento bajo. Conclusión: Se considera la necesidad de mejorar el método de enseñanza ICDAS en los estudiantes de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Central del Ecuador logrando así efectivizar la identificación de lesiones tempranas de caries y brindando la posibilidad de ofrecer tratamientos oportunos en detección temprana de la enfermedad.

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease, which development starts long before there is any carious lesion in the mouth. Its evolution compromises the tissues of the dental organ significantly, and it’s one of the main causes of the dental appointments; therefore, it is important to perform an efficient diagnosis through the methods that represent higher sensitivity and specificity. Objective: to identify the knowledge about the criteria of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) amongst the students of the 8th and 9th semester of the Faculty of Odontology. Materials and method: it was performed a transversal, descriptive, quantitative and qualitative study, and the simple was made up of 205 students of the 8th and 9th semester of the faculty of odontology of the Central University of Ecuador. The instrument used was validated, and contains 13 questions about the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). The results were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS 23.0. The percentage of knowledge was determined and the statistical test Chi-squared showed a significance of 0.05, with 95% of reliability. Results: based on the study performed on students from 8th and 9th semester of Odontology of the Central University of Ecuador, it was determined that they have little knowledge about the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). 30.62% showed to have an adequate knowledge, while 61.54% showed to have little knowledge. Conclusion: It is considered the need to improve the method for teaching the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) to students of the Faculty of Odontology of the Central University of Ecuador, in order to aid the early identification of carious lesions and provide the possibility to offer timely treatments
